New Jersey man Matthew Camp loses $12,000 from backpack on motorcyle ride

Matthew Camp, a careless New Jersey fisherman who lost $12,000 when it fluttered out of his backpack earlier this week, has caught a lucky break, miraculously locating all but $3,000 of his savings.

Matthew Camp, 32, of Camp May, was high on life after a windfall scallop haul. He cashed a $12,000 check at his local bank on September 9 and used a backpack to transport the money which he planned to spend on an engagement ring for his girlfriend.

Unfortunately for Camp, a dodgy zipper on his bag sent the cash fluttering out into the night as he rode his motorcycle down Garden State Parkway one evening this week. He only realized his screw-up as he changed into his work clothes at the dock.

Camp sped back to the parkway and found a cleanup crew who had incredibly gathered up $4,000 and promptly returned it to him.

After the story appeared in the paper, a truck driver came forward another $5,300 and plans to return it, leaving Camp just a few thousand short.
