Jill is a Nintendo character you might not know, but that’s due more to her circumstance than her game. Released for the Game Boy Advance just as the Nintendo DS was taking off, Drill Dozer was one of the best—and most unfairly overlooked—new Nintendo games in years. Developed by the makers of Pokémon, Drill Dozer is a 2D action-platformer that’s all about drilling. Jill is the leader of a gang of thieves who are fond of drilling, she operates a tank that’s made for drilling, and she sets off on a quest that’s going to involve lots and lots of drilling. The concept is central to Drill Dozer’s design, as virtually every level adds a new twist to the drilling mechanic. Jill can drill through enemies and dirt, but she can also use her drill to make long jumps and solve puzzles. Drilling puzzles, in particular, are very common in Drill Dozer. It’s a game with a singular gameplay focus, which could get repetitive, but it’s so clever about its implementation that it never does. Drill Dozer is one of the best Nintendo games most people have never heard of. This video review features video gameplay footage of Drill Dozer for the Game Boy Advance and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
