Millions Sick and Tens of Thousands Dying From Drug-Resistant Superbugs

According to a new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and prevention, or CDC, “more than two million people are sickened every year with antibiotic-resistant infections, with at least 23,000 dying.”

What happens when increasing numbers of superbugs meet a dwindling number of new antibiotics? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, “more than two million people are sickened every year with antibiotic-resistant infections, with at least 23,000 dying.”

Those conservatively low numbers are caused by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics by doctors and patients. Why does North Dakota have twice the need for antibiotics as California? The CDC says, “up to 50% of all the antibiotics prescribed for people are not needed or are not optimally effective as prescribed.”

The food industry also pumps animals full of antibiotics. The CDC advises that, “the practice should be phased out.”

As antibiotics kill protective good bacteria and spread drug-resistant bacteria, already risky procedures such as chemotherapy and surgery are even more dangerous.

The CDC advises antibiotic treatments should be appropriately dispensed and carefully followed, and encourages prevention techniques such as hand hygiene and safe food handling. The American Chiropractic Association advocates alternative methods for preventing and treating disease. For example, research from a pilot study showed chiropractic adjustments cleared 80 percent of children’s chronic ear infections for at least 6 months.
