The company called Elysium Space, which is based in San Francisco, is offering a space funeral for just under two grand. The business can transport someone’s cremated body into low orbit.
The ashes will then go around the earth for several months before they come back into the atmosphere. The human remains will then burn up and morph into a shooting star.
Loved ones based on the ground will be able to monitor the ashes via a smartphone application. An editor at Elysium Space described the tracking process noting “Family and friends follow this journey through the stars using our beautiful mobile app, which shows in real time the spacecraft location and how the world looks from this majestic place.”
All takeoffs depart from a space launching facility located in Florida. The innovative burial is said to produce absolutely no orbital pollution.
Clients receive a kit, complete with a capsule which is where the family member’s remains can be scooped into. The company is hoping to send approximately 100 capsules out on a single satellite some time in 2014.
