Spiders Cause Delays for 5 Flights

Kansas City Air Traffic Controllers will probably not be watching the 1990 movie Arachnophobia any time soon. Five flights were delayed for landing or takeoff to protect the safety of both employees and passengers when spiders invaded the Air Traffic Control Center.

Three employees reported spider bites, and everyone was relocated to another area of the building. The breed of spider was not identified.

Exterminators discovered a hatched nest egg that may have caused the infestation. CJ Workman from Schendel Pest Control said most eggs can easily produce up to 400 spiders and large breeds around 1,000. Most likely, the mama spider may have bit to protect her young.

People who are indoors should look out for eggs, especially in older buildings like the Air Traffic Control Center built in the 1960s. Almost 50% of the thousands of animal-related workplace injuries are from insect bites and stings, but do mostly involve people who work outdoors.

While most U.S. spider bites are not harmful, the black widow, brown recluse, and hobo spiders in particular may be deadly.
